Today the girls and I spent a full day at Science World in Vancouver, from opening until 4pm when the Little One crumpled into a heap and declared that she couldn’t walk another step (hardly surprising after the 9+ mile scootering of yesterday!)
It’s a very hands on science exhibition, a bit like the Blast Off in the Science Museum in London, but over a much larger space with interactive science shows demonstrating different interesting science concepts in a fun way (bubbles, the science of toys, how optical illusions work etc).
We explored the magic of mirrors, optical illusions, light, electricity, water, levers and pulleys – and that was just in the first gallery! There was an excellent outdoor science gallery and a gallery devoted to environmental science which included a giant hamster wheel that allowed you to run in it to generate enough energy to power a smart phone. The girls loved this and fortunately they didn’t get a film of me doing it…
We watched a science show on bubbles which included 3 people being put inside huge bubbles and bubbles full of dry ice, which dropped to the floor and left little patches of dry ice floating around:
There were also exploding bubbles and bubbles within bubbles. The girls didn’t moved for the whole 20 minutes and spent most of that time with their mouths open in wonder!
We also watched a show on illusions which the girls really liked too.
We built some towers in a room dedicated to building and architecture. And then we knocked them down again – even though the Big One wanted to offer my tower to Science World for displaying in the museum! There were some truly amazing structures built with just these wooden blocks, including beautiful towers that went all the way to the ceiling.
We travelled to Science World on the SkyTrain which the girls loved as it felt like we were flying over Vancouver and gave us some lovely views of the city. To give us enough energy to keep going for the rest of the day, we stopped off for some ice cream at Bella Gelateria – our new favourite ice cream shop (see here for previous ice cream adventures: Gelato). This was our third visit in 4 days but it is very very nice!
The ice cream is so good it has even won competitions in Italy for the best gelato. We definitely like it…
